Kew Village
Within the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames nestles historic & picturesque Kew Village with its wealth of tradition and local interest.
Local facilities & amenities are excellent.
Renowned for its outstanding Primary Schools, Kew has road links to the M3/M4 & A4 Motorways and from the station at Kew Village (which has both overground and underground trains), Central London and all it has to offer can be enjoyed in little more than half an hour.
There is of course, a good selection of local pubs, restaurants, pavement cafes and shops on the doorstep and the magnificent River Thames and all it brings flows through by Kew Green.

For those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle there are walks along the tow path; the ‘country side’ of Richmond Royal Park (National Nature Reserve and Special Area of Conservation) famous for its free roaming deer in a 2500 acre pastoral landscape of hills, woodlands, grasslands, ponds and ancient trees is just a short bike, bus or car journey away, whilst other parks and places of interest such as Hampton Court Palace, Gunnersbury Park with its Museum, Osterley Park (extensive grounds & Stately Home) and Syon House & Park are also just a short distance away.

Kew Village, an area of listed buildings & conservations areas, is lucky enough to have one of the few remaining original and charming Tea Rooms in the country. Opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens stands ‘Newens’, known as ‘The Maids of Honour’ Tea Shop, established some 300 years ago as a family business. After moving to Kew in 1860 it remains to this day being run by the fifth generation of the family and serves traditional (and now rarely found!) truly delicious homemade savouries, pastries and teas.

There is plenty to do within Kew itself with varied local attractions for both residents and visitors alike including the Kew Bridge Steam Museum, The Musical Museum and of course, the World Heritage Site – The Royal Botanic Gardens (known simply as ‘Kew Gardens’) with its famous pagoda, glass houses and listed buildings set in 300 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens – link text
and currently celebrating its birthday! – 250 years of ‘Botanical Paradise’ – linktext
The area has extensive sports and leisure facilities. The Borough publishes various brochures & literature which includes information regarding horse riding in Richmond Park. A list of other riding stables and establishments (such as Wimbledon Common) is available from local libraries. Safe cycle routes, both practical and those including features of interest are planned and marked around the local area both on roads and along the Thames Path. Richmond Park provides a fantastic ‘green’ route taking cyclists away from traffic – cycling is permitted on all roads and some specially designated cycle routes within the Park. For rugby fans, Twickenham Rugby Ground is very close by and there are local Rugby, Tennis, Bowls & Cricket Clubs. Parks, lakes and the river offer plenty of opportunities for the keen angler!

The Kew Society, ‘a local amenity, conservation group & registered charity of more than 100 years, is an influential organisation dedicated to enhancing the beauty of Kew and preserving its heritage.’ For information regarding initiatives, local schools, groups & societies and social events visit – linktext
On nearby Richmond Little Green stands the famous Richmond Theatre that frequently previews and shows West End productions. It is one of the most beautiful Frank Matcham theatres; built in 1899 as the Theatre Royal & Opera House and refurbished in 1991. Just around the corner is the Orange Tree Theatre & Public House, well known for its range of both contemporary and 18th & 19th Century plays.
There are two Odeons as well as the Richmond Filmhouse – an ‘art house’ specializing in world cinema and screenings of films not on general release. The Filmhouse is by the River Thames which has along side it wine bars, public houses and restaurants as well as pleasure trips and boats for hire.

Transport yourself for a meander along the scenic Thames – link text – go to ‘The River’ and choose (click on) a riverside area to enjoy (infoRICH).
Richmond-Upon-Thames has more green space than any other London Borough with 260 public rights of way & five walking routes promoted with signs and leaflets. In addition the Council’s Parks Section maintains over a hundred parks, open spaces, commons and woodlands. The Council also looks after children’s playgrounds, paddling pools, nature reserves and a wide range of sports pitches. An active Arts Council produces a comprehensive list of events including talks, lectures, musical events & exhibitions and provides information regarding varied local societies and groups including the Kew Horticultural Society and Kew Young Musicians (a specialist school).
Numerous and varied children’s activities take place throughout the year and Kew also has several Brownie, Guide, Cub and Scout Troops (which includes Beavers – under eights and Venture Scouts – over 14/15’s). Various Schemes, Clubs and activities run after school and throughout the school holidays. Kew Scouts, set up in 1909 and one of the first troops to be established also has a special birthday. We are pleased to join Kew Village in congratulating them in celebrating their Centenary this year!
But perhaps some the nicest things in Kew are the traditional local events that bring residents and visitors of all ages together.
A number of festivities and celebrations take place around Kew and on the Village Green. As well as the seasonal cricket matches with ‘the church on the green’ (St. Anne’s) serving home made teas, the larger Green is home to an annual Victorian Fair, May Fair, Village Fetes and Summer Fairs (for which we are pleased to be one of the sponsors).
Christmas in Kew is celebrated by ‘Kew Sparkle’ – a particularly charming tradition. There is ice skating at Kew Gardens and in the evening, the Village Centre, decorated with lights funded by local businesses, is closed to traffic whilst local proprietors hold ‘open house’ for the evening. Everyone is welcome and the road becomes alive with street entertainment & music with treats and surprises around every corner!
